EtherCAT Mechanism: Like a high-speed train passing stations. The data frame sent by the master is like a train; each slave node is like a station. As the train passes each station (with nanosecond-level delay), the station instantly takes what it needs (reads commands addressed to it) and loads new data (inserts its status information back into the frame). The train never stops; all data exchange happens while the frame "rushes by" completing synchronously.

This mechanism enables EtherCAT to achieve an effective data utilization rate of over 90% in cyclic process data transmission scenarios — a significant improvement over traditional industrial Ethernet (e.g., TCP/IP architecture) — while markedly reducing communication latency.
It can operate with extremely short cycle times (down to 100 µs in typical high-performance cases, depending on node count and data volume), simultaneously handling cyclic process data exchanges for hundreds of I/O points and servo drives. This meets the stringent real-time control demands of high-speed packaging machines, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and similar applications.
Using Distributed Clock (DC) technology, EtherCAT achieves network-wide synchronization jitter of less than 1 µs (typically in the tens of nanoseconds). It supports linear, tree, and star topologies. In a linear topology (daisy chain), typically only one cable is needed to connect all devices; tree/star topologies can use splitters for branching connections without requiring additional switches. For cable redundancy (preventing single-point failures in critical lines), adding a second Ethernet port at the master suffices; slaves natively support redundant configuration.
