Advanced Driver Assistance System Said to the "Vehicle Ethernet": "We Have to Rely on" You" Then!”

With the support of national policies, with the development of intelligent and electric vehicle technology, a new era of electric vehicles and intelligent vehicles has arrived. The rapid development of intelligent electric vehicles has put forward higher requirements for the "on-board network", including: higher bandwidth, faster transmission rate, smaller outer diameter, higher flexibility, better cost-efficiency and so on.

These requirements seem to be a big problem for the rapid development of intelligent electric vehicles, fortunately, we have "intelligent human brain".  When the traditional bus cable can not meet the needs of the development of the vehicle network, human beings invented the "vehicle single pair Ethernet (cable)".  So, why is our Vehicle Ethernet more in line with the development needs of today's intelligent electric vehicles? Why do our automobile need to embrace single-pair Ethernet technology?

First of all, most traditional automobile’s serial bus cables cannot meet the needs of intelligent electric vehicle data transmission today.

In March 2020, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued <Automation Classifications of Car Driving> which stipulates that L1-L2 (automobile driving’s automation classifications level) level system can take over a small number of, discontinuous vehicle control tasks, belong to the high level of Advanced Driving Assistance System(referred to as "ADAS" or "auxiliary driving") (that is to say: secondary automatic driving system can liberate drivers’ hands in a short time); The L3-L5 level system can perform continuous driving tasks under certain circumstances after activation, which belongs to the scope of autonomous driving.

Secondary autonomous driving systems may require five RADAR sensors and five cameras, while fully autonomous driving systems (levels 4 and 5) will require up to 20 RADAR sensors and six cameras as well as V2X communication. In short, as the level of the autonomous driving system changes, the total amount of data transmission will increase with the number of independent sensors.

In addition, Intel had previously predicted that a connected self-driving car would generate 4 TB of data for every eight running hours (mainly due to the hundreds of on-board sensors that self-driving automobile will have.) The transmission, storage and sharing of these data require high throughput, high transmission rate, high immunity, low immunity, less wiring, low latency, safe and reliable network —— In-car single pair Ethernet can just meet these requirements.

Most of serial bus cables of the conventional vehicle fail to reach a 70 MB/s data transmission rate. In order to realize automated driving, it is necessary to integrate various sensing technologies and wireless communication technologies (including far-range, medium-range and short-range radar, laser radar, cameras, ultrasonic sensors and GPS, etc.) in the car, with the network structure compatible with different transmission rates and communication protocols. With the simultaneous use of LIDAR, RADAR, camera, and V2X communication, the vehicle network needs to transmit too much data which is more than the existing capacity of a conventional car serial bus. Therefore, the automotive industry needs the addition of "on-board single-to-Ethernet" to make access to autonomous driving and advanced ADAS systems a reality.

Compared with the traditional Ethernet, the on-board single pair of Ethernet has its unique advantages. In automotive automation systems, the traditional (classical) Ethernet requires two pairs of wires to achieve data transmission rate of 100 Mbps, or four pairs of CAT 5e wires to achieve a 1 Gbps transmission rate (operating frequency of 100 MHz; each pair can send and receive data). A single pair of Ethernet can achieve a data transmission rate of at least 100 Mbps with only a pair of single wires.
